Liverpool are being linked with a swoop for PSV Eindhovens Carlos Salcido as they continue their search for a new left-back.

With Fabio Aurelio having departed Anfield and Emiliano Insuas probable sale to Fiorentina, Roy Hodgson is quickly trying to shore up the left hand side of his defence with only two weeks before the Premier League begins.

The Mexican began his career with Club Deportivo Guadalajara and made 105 appearances for the club scoring 2 goals over the course of five seasons. His form earned him a call up to the national team and he was ever present during the 2006 World Cup.

His displays earned him a move to PSV where he has played 121 games and scored three goals. He possesses excellent leadership skills and following Phillip Cocus retirement he was named captain. He has helped the Rood-Witten to two league titles.

The 5ft 9 inch is a good all round fullback. As with most modern full backs he loves to bomb forward providing extra width on the left flank. As well as pace he has the full repertoire of tricks and flicks in his game. He is also able to use his right foot and can unleash a ferocious shot whilst cutting infield.

Defensively he could be a little stronger but he is excellent at anticipating how play will develop and get the all important interception. Whilst he could be a slightly stronger he is no coward and will not shirk a physical confrontation. One area of his play that does need to be worked on is his ball retention.

Interestingly, Liverpool fans may remember him as he played against them in the Champions league in 2006/07 and 2008/09.

Roy Hodgson has proved in the past that he has an excellent eye for defensive players. The reported transfer fee is 2 million an absolute bargain for his experience and ability.

Valencia and Wigan are also said to be interested in acquiring his signature so the transfer fee may head northwards. Still wi! th cover needed at short notice this would represent an excellent purchase.
