Mid-Day Ticker: Man City targets Torres, MLS lands Salgado and more
By FRANCO PANIZO
The list of star players linked with Manchester City continues to grow.
Fernando Torres has become the latest Manchester City target, with manager Roberto Mancini claiming the club is interested in signing the Spanish striker as long as Manchester City can afford a deal and if Torres wants to leave Liverpool.
Torres has not committed his future to Liverpool, and new club manager Roy Hodgson even added that the striker has felt let down due to broken promises, making it possible that he transfers elsewhere this summer.
Despite being sidelined for a chunk of the Premiership season last year, Torres still managed to score 18 goals for Liverpool.
Here are some more stories to help get you through the day:
MLS lands Salgado
MLS has signed foreign-based U.S. youth national team forward Omar Salgado, a former youth player of Chivas Guadalajara. The 16-year-old has signed a Generation adidas contract, meaning he will enter next January's MLS SuperDraft as opposed to going through a weighted lottery.
Salgado was considered a hot prospect with Chivas until he announced his decision to want to represent the United States, a decision that went against the club's policy of fielding only Mexico-eligible players.
Maradona willing to stay on as Argentina coach
Diego Maradona is open to continuing as Argentina manager, as long as he is allowed to keep his entire staff.
The situation comes after Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Julio Grondona criticized Maradona assistant, Oscar Ruggeri. Maradonasaid that subject will be the first one discussed with Grondona during scheduled meetings with the AFA on Monday. The soccer legend also said Ruggeri will need to remain if he is to return for another four-year cycle.
