Ezequiel Calvente scores audacious switch hit penalty for Spain U19s v Italy
It is rare to see something new in football but if it was going to come from anybody it was likely to be a Spanish national team player.
The Spain Under-19 side confirmed their spot as Group B winners with a fine 3-0 demolition of Italy at the Under-19 European Championships in France today.
Ruben Rochina and Liverpool forward Dani Pacheco had given Espana a two-goal lead at the break and with an eye on the semi-finals coach Luis Milla rested a couple of his big name players and brought on Real Betis midfielder Ezequiel Calvente.
Perhaps looking to make his mark on probably the favourites to win the tournament, Calvente, a left-sided player from Real Betis, earned himself a penalty in the 57th minute following a foul by Alessandro Crescenzi.
In the few match reports since Spains victory Ezequiel Calventes penalty has been described as cheeky, audacious and here on 101gg we called it ingenious.
In Spain, Marca praised the El Betico for inventing a new way of taking penalties.
Taking a leaf out of England cricket batsman Kevin Pietersens repertoire, Calventes penalty has to be seen to be believed and for good measure it also riled the Italians.
