The Need for Goal Line Technology Continues: Goran Obradovic (FC Sion) vs FC Basel
Sepp Blatter is a twat for so many reasons, but his pig-headed refusal as the head of Fifa to allow goal line technology to be introduced into the beautiful game will likely be regarded as his bigger mistake once his career is over.
Already this summer England suffered arguably the biggest injustice in World Cup history when Frank Lampards goal was disallowed against Germany. Then, just a week ago, a second gross injustice was witnessed at the Womens Under-20 World Cup as Frances Lea Rubio was denied an equally 100% legal goal in yet another match against the Germans.
And now its happened again.
Last weekend in Switzerland saw FC Sion play host the FC Basel. The visitors won 2-1, but it could have been so different had the match officials correctly awarded a goal to Goran Obradovic.
With the scores level a 1-apiece at the start of the second half, Sion put together a well worked attack. From a throw-in, left-back Sautier pinged a ball into striker Aleksandar Prijovic who in turn chested the ball down to Goran Obradovic.
Standing just outside the edge of the D, Obradovic wasted no time in arching his body over the ball and whacking a fine first-time strike on target. His shot was partially stopped by Basel keeper Franco Costanzo, but the number one couldnt prevent the ball from slowly trickling its way towards the goal.
As if in slow motion the ball crept towards the far post. Costanzo made a superb effort to try and stop the ball crossing the line, but with the margin so-so close everyone looked towards the linesman to see if a goal had been scored.
The linesman said no. The television replays showed yes. Another injustice was created.
