College soccer mid-week roundup: Akron rolls, Butler routs Indiana and more

No. 1 Akron improved to 4-0 over Top-10 opponents with a narrow 1-0 victory over No. 9 Creighton on Wednesday. A Darlington Nagbe goal was enough for the Zips to extend their home unbeaten streak to 22 games. Creighton was shut out for the first time this season as Akron continues to be the top-scoring and top-defending team in the country.

No. 8 Butler made an emphatic case for their postseason credentials with a dominating 4-1 victory over No. 25 Indiana. Tyler Pollock netted a brace for the Bulldogs, and Austin Oldham and substitute Jacob Capito added a goal piece. Indiana, which rose back into the NSCAA rankings for the first time since second week of the season, received its goal from Will Bruin.

No. 22 Tulsa's freefall continued with a 2-1 defeat to lowly Kentucky, as the Golden Hurricanes are in real danger of falling out of the postseason picture after rising to a peak of No. 2. Tyler Riggs and Matt Lodge scored in the second half to give Kentucky the comeback victory.

North Carolina 1, Virginia Commonwealth 0: A 32nd-minute winner from Josh Rice was enough to secure an uneasy victory for the Tar Heels.

No. 13 Brown 2, Holy Cross 0: Jon Okafor and Jay Hayward scored for the Bears.

WEDNESDAY

No. 18 Boston College 2, Dartmouth 1: Amit Aburmad scored with less than a minute left in regulation and the Eagles extend their unbeaten streak to seven games.

No. 17 William & Mary 1, UNC-Wilmington 0 (OT): William & Mary secured the CAA regular-season title with a goal from Nicholas Abrigo.

Penn State 2, No. 14 Pennsylvania 1: An own goal from Zach Barnett doomed the Quakers against their in-state rivals.

No. 24 South Florida 2, Rutgers 1: Two seniors, Shawn Chin and Andre Mitt! oo, gave USF a senior-night victory over Rutgers.

No. 2 Louisville 2, Syracuse 1: Colin Rolfe and Dylan Mares scored for the Cardinals.

San Diego University 2, No. 21 Loyola Marymount 1: Stephen Posa and Cory Norris scored as San Diego State upset Loyola Marymount.

No. 15 UCLA 2, Cal State Northridge 1: Victor Chavez netted a brace within 13 minutes for the Bruins.

Cal Poly 2, No. 19 UC Santa Barbara 1 (OT): Chris Gaschen scored less than three minutes into overtime to down the Gauchos.

No. 7 UC-Irvine 2, UC Riverside 1: Amani Walker scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season on the hour mark.

No. 6 Connecticut at Georgetown: Postponed to Thursday because of inclement weather.
