European League Weekend Rewind

It was a tough week for traditional powerhouses at the tops of their leagues as Chelsea and Arsenal lost in England and Inter Milan faltered against Roma in Italy.

Carlos Tevez provided the winner in Manchester City's victory against previously-unbeaten Chelsea, while Mirko Vucinic netted a late winner to lift struggling Roma to a sorely-needed victory against Inter Milan.

Upstart league leaders in France and Germany pulled off good results against their leagues' respective powers, with St. Etienne defeating Lyon and Mainz taking care of Bayern Munich.

Here is a rundown of all the weekend scores from Europe's top leagues:

ENGLAND

Chelsea's perfect start to the Premier League season ended with a thud this weekend at Manchester City. After scoring 21 goals in their first five matches, the Blues were held goalless for the first time in the campaign. Chelsea's slip-up didn't cost them much ground in the title race, however, as West Bromwich Albion surprisingly handed Arsenal its first defeat of the season, and Manchester United needed a late equalizer from Michael Owen to avoid a similar fate at Bolton.

The extra work seemed to take its toll, as neither leaders Valencia nor Real Madrid were able to take all six points from the week's matches. The only team to acc! omplish that feat? Barcelona, which doesn't seem to be struggling in Lionel Messi's absence. Here are the weekend scores:

ITALY

Italian sides also played two matches each last week. Leaders Inter Milan handled Bari easily on Wednesday, winning 4-0. But the five-time defending Serie A champs stumbled on the weekend, losing to Roma 1-0. Keeping Inter company at the top of the table are Lazio, who earned four points on the week with a 1-1 home draw with AC Milan and a 1-0 win away to Chievo. Here are the weekend scores:

Rennes beat Nice 2-1 on Saturday, while St. Etienne defeated Lyon 1-0 in Lyon. For their part, the former seven-time French champions are struggling mightily. Having taken only 5 points from their seven matches, Lyon currently occupy the final relegation spot in France.
