NCAA midweek roundup: Ohio State ties Akron, UNC falls and more

Akron saw their dreams of a perfect season end as the Zips drew 2-2 on the road to Ohio State in dramatic fashion Wednesday night. Darren Mattocks broke a 1-1 deadlock for Akron in the 68th minute and Akron appeared to on their way to a seventh-straight win, but David Timestra scored with three seconds left in regulation to equalize. Neither team could score in the overtime period. A record 7,255 fans turned out for the match.

North Carolina celebrated their ascendence to No. 2 in the NSCAA rankings bysufferinga 2-1 upset at the hands of Old Dominion on Tuesday. Enzo Martinez put the Tar Heels up early with his third goal of the season coming in the 25th minute. Gideon Asante leveled for Old Dominion just seconds before halftime. Old Dominion survived a UNC offensive onslaught after the break and eventually nicked a game winner in the 80th minute. Asante completed his brace with a cool finish off a breakaway.

Elsewhere, Elon managed to draw No. 9 Duke 1-1 on Tuesday. A 56th-minute goal by Christopher Tweed-Kent was offset by a 74th minute strike from Denzel Ogunayse.

TUESDAY COLLEGE SCOREBOARD

No. 4 Virginia 2, Longwood 0: Will Bates and Brian Span scored for the Cavaliers, who secured their third-straight shutout.

No. 3 Connecticut 2, No. 15 Boston College 0: A couple of second-half goals from Carlos Alvarez and Tony Cascio were enough for the Huskies.

No. 18 St. John's 2, Yale 1 (OT): An own goal from Yale less than a minute into overtime completed the comeback victory for St. John's.

WENDESDAY COLLEGE SCOREBOARD

No. 6 Louisville 2, Kentucky 0: Goals from Dylan Mares and Austin Berry were enough for the Cardinals.

No. 24 Penn State 4, St. Francis 3: Mackenzie Arment completed the comeback victory f! or the N ittany Lions, who managed 24 shots on goal.

No. 21 West Virginia 0, Duquesne 0: West Virginia extended their unbeaten streak to five games with their scoreless draw.

No. 12 UC Irvine 3, UC Riverside 0: Christian Hernandez, Amani Walker and Gray Bailey scored for UC Irvine.
