College Round-up: Akron routs Tulsa, UCSB tops UCLA, and more

If there was any doubt about who is the best team in the country, No. 1 Akron removed it with a 4-0 dismantling of No. 2 Tulsa on Friday evening. The Zips again held their opposition scoreless, their 11th straight game with a shutout dating back to last season.

It didn't take long for Akron to go ahead. Kofie Sarkodie's shot was deflected past Ray Clark in the ninth minute. Four minutes later, Perry Kitchen put home a close-range shot after a scramble in front of goal. Darren Mattocks and Anthony Ampaipitakwong each scored second-half goals.

The clash between the top two teams in the country was attended by 4,744 fans, a record for an Akron soccer game.

UC-Santa Barbara defeated No. 13 UCLA 2-0 in front of a record crowd of 15,896 at Harder Stadium on Friday night. The crowd had to wait until the 75th minute for the breakthrough but David Opoku put home a rebound off a Santa Barbara corner. Luis Silva added an insurance goal in the last minute of regulation by slotting a cool finish past Brian Rowe.

Friday also saw a couple of high-profile ACC matchups. No. 3 North Carolina topped No. 5 Maryland 2-1 with a couple of goals from Michael Farfan. Matt Kassel brought one back for the Terrapins but they couldn't find an equalizer. Elsewhere, No. 11 Duke defeated No. 11 Boston College 1-0 thanks to Christopher Tweed-Kent, who notched his first goal of the season with a game-winner seven minutes from time.

On Saturday, Loyola (MD) handed No. 4 Monmouth their first defeat of the season, topping the Hawks 2-0. Loyola took the lead just before halftime with a Gary Weisbum goal. The lead was doubled seven minutes after the restart off a Phil Bannister header.

No. 18 UC-Irvine 4, Cal State Bakersfield 0: Andrew Fontain set the UC-Irvine record for shutouts with the 15th of his career.

Indiana 3, No. 20 Penn State 2: Will Bruin scored on the last kick of the game to give Indiana a much-needed win.

No. 16 Creighton 1, Wisconsin 0 (OT): a 96th minute winner from Ethan Finlay gave the Blue Jays an overtime victory.

No. 9 Southern Methodist 3, UAB 2: Southern Methodist almost squandered a 3-0 lead but held on to remain perfect on the season.

SATURDAY'S COLLEGE SCOREBOARD

Notre Dame 1, No. 12 St. John's: A 70th minute goal from Steven Perry was enough for the Irish to secure the upset.

No. 22 Brown 3, Vermont 0: T.J. Popolizo, Sean Rosa and Jon Okafor all got on the scoresheet for Brown.

No. 8 Louisville 2, Providence 1: Kenny Walker and Dylan Mares scored to give the Cardinals the comeback victory.

No. 19 Wake Forest 2, UNC-Greensboro 1: Andy Lubahn scored nine minutes from time to rescue a win for the Demon Deacons.

No. 23 Ohio State 1, Michigan 0: A lone Sam Scales goals was enough for the Buckeyes to secure a win in their Big-10 opener.

No. 7 Virginia 1, Clemson 0: Ari Damas netted the winner for the Cavaliers less than three minutes from the end of regulation.
