I was delighted with the penalty and it will give me confidence. It was a great feeling. It was a great relief and I am sure you could see that with my celebrations. Hopefully I can kick on from this. When you score it is always a special moment but to do it at Rangers it is well known I follow Celtic and after a hard couple of months, it was such a great feeling. It was nice to score but the main thing was to get back playing. I am happy with that. Wayne Rooney.

A disappointing World Cup, his dalliances with prostitutes and his u-turn on leaving Manchester United were finally put on the back burner for Wayne Rooney on Wednesday night as he played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 Champions League win at Rangers.

At Ibroz Wazza looked full of energy and came close to breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half when he headed against the bar from a Fabio cross.

In the second half Rooney was again a whisker away from putting Manchester United in front with a free-kick that flashed across the Rangers goal.

The breakthrough did of course come with seconds to go after Fabio had won a penalty for being kicked in the head by Steven Naismith. Rooney converted easily and continued his recent charm offensive by celebratingin front of the Manchester United fans.

Aswe all await Rooneys first goal from open play for Sir Alex Fergusons side this season it is worth pointing out that this time last season he had claimed just seven goals and wouldgo on to notch 34. The flood gates could well open soon
