Video Evidence: Will Wenger seek to convert Juan into a defensive midfielder at Arsenal?

Sky Sports are reporting that despite the imminent arrival of Sebastien Squillaci, Arsenal are considering making yet another defensive acquisition. This time for Romas 31 year old central defender Juan.

The Brazilian may sound familiar to Arsenal fans as he scored the goal that took Arsene Wengers side to penalties in the quarter final of the Champions League in 2009, which Arsenal memorably won (1.10 on this video).

Having lost four central defenders this summer, Arsenal have replaced two through signings and one via the return of Johan Djourou. So it is conceivable that another defender will arrive.

What will please Arsenal fans is the depth of his experience. Wenger has often been criticised for not paying enough respect to what older players can bring to the team in terms of attitude, commitment and level-headedness both on and off the pitch.

Juan began his career with Flamengo (75 appearances and 5 goals) before he was spotted by Bayer Leverkusen and brought to Europe. Afterfive seasons with the German club (139 appearances and 10 goals) he was purchased by Roma to replace the fans favourite Cristian Chivu.

Many were sceptical, but his performances have won over the notoriously difficult to please Ultras. His positional sense is excellent and he uses his athleticism to close down people quickly. What will please Gunners fans is that his aerial ability is superb, he possesses a tremendous leap (he stands at 5 ft 11.5 inches) which enables him to win headers against much taller opponents.

He is strong and has honed his physical prowess in the Bundesliga, where the style of play is comparable to the rough and tumble of the Premier League. Juan is considered to be one of the best defenders in Serie A, a huge accolade in a league where defensive ability is prized.

Juan plays for the Brazil team and he has won 79 caps. He played on Brazils tournament winning teams in ! the Copa Amrica 2004 and the Copa Amrica 2007. He is widely considered to be one of the most consistent players on the national team, and was ever present during the World Cup in South Africa.

Arsene Wenger loves to sign versatile players and here at 101gg we have a sneaking suspicion that the Arsenal manager may try to utilise him as a defensive midfielder in conjunction with another former central defender, Alex Song. He would bring much needed steel to the Arsenal midfield and increase the protection given to the back four.

Unsurpsingly, Roma will fight to keep their man but if Arsenal manage to pull this acquisition off they will have achieved a remarkable transfer coup. A player worth getting excited about.
