VIDEO: Genoas Mesto scores first goal of Serie A season with excellent overhead kick

Italys Serie A may be lagging behind fellow top European leagues, La Liga and the Premier League for example, but the campaign began in exciting fashion last night with one of the finest goals of the season.

The match between Udinese and Genoa appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw until Giandomenico Mesto appeared with a fantastic overhead kick to win the game for the Rossoblu.

The 28-year-old midfielder is not known for scoring, he claimed five goals in 42 appearances last season and none in 27 matches in 2008/2009. It is also unlikely that Mesto has scored a better goal in his career. Mesto said after the game It was tough out there and perhaps my goal was lucky, but it decided game.

For comparison, the opening goal of the Spanish La Liga season was a trademark header from one of Spains World Cup winning squad members, Fernando Llorenteto secureAthletic Bilbaos 1-0 win at Hercules.

Brazils Serie A also provided a couple of excellent goals yesterday. Ze Robertos howitzer put Vasco ahead at home to Cruzeiro and Ze Eduardos acrobatic volley put Santos one-up in their win over Goias.
