Malaysian fans attack Indonesian players with laser beams

I am upset. I am not happy at all, its very unsporting for Malaysian fans to do so. We were worried about a clash between the fans so we have put in place measures to segregate them but using laser beams was rather a new thing to us. I am not pleased at all. In fact I was embarrassed in front of my Indonesian guests. Malaysian Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

The use of lasers at football matches has been seen periodically in 2010, as Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi can testify, however matters got a little bit out of control in Malaysia on Boxing Day as the use of the instrument from the stands caused a match with Indonesia to be held up for several minutes.

Malaysian fans were accused of unsporting behaviour by their own government ministers after laser beams were aimed directly in the faces of Indonesian players during an ASEAN Football Championships match which Malaysia won 3-0.

After being blinded by the green light in their eyes early in the second half, the Indonesian players walked off the pitch in protest as the match officials warned fans that the match would be called off if their behaviour continued. Eventually the game resumed six minutes later and shortly after the restart, Indonesia conceded three goals.

Footage of the laser beam attack and the Indonesian walk-off protest can be seen here.
