Italian media react to World Cup exit

Italy's calcio-crazy media did not take the Azzurri's World Cup exit with a shrug and a smile. Below you'll find a quick selection of headlines from the websites of the bigger newpapers. Not recommended reading if you're a member of the current Italian national team. For you I recommend the Busted Racquet tennis blog instead. Everyone else, read on...

The Gazzetta dello Sport decided the Azzurri were coming "Home with Shame", and used an accompanying image of captain Fabio Cannavaro bent double and looking like he was about to hurl:

Corriere dello Sport also worked the shame+captain angle. Their headline: "Italy, what a shame! Out and last in the group".

Tuttosport were much more specific, with the headline reading "LIPPI, it's your fault!" The caps lock means they're shouting at him:

La Stampa had an audio report from Roberto Beccantini, under the headline "Azzurri ridiculous, out without excuse":

La Repubblica went with "NEVER SO BAD: Italy Back at home", thereby declaring this the worst Italian World Cup performance ever:

So to sum up: Out, shame, Lippi to blame. My advice for Lippi's replacement Cesare Prandelli is to do much much better at Euro 2012 than Lippi did at World Cup 2010. Or failing that, unlearn how to read.
