Group F: Slovakia dump world champions Italy out the World Cup; Paraguay-New Zealand goalless

Slovakia 3 - Italy 2 (World Cup 2010, June 24, 2010) Slovakia punished a poor looking Italy side in the 25th minute when Robert Vittek fired past Marchetti after De Rossi had given the ball away in midfield to Hamsik. Italy continued to struggle and Marchetti had to push away a long range effort from Jendrisek. Gennaro Gattuso showed his frustration with a poor tackle towards the end of the half. The Azzurri did not improve in the second half despite the introduction of Andrea Pirlo, their best chance fell to Quagliarella who saw his volley brilliantly deflected off the line by Martin Skrtel. Hamsik was again the provider for Robert Vittek to put Slovakia 2-0 up and looked to have sent the world champions crashing out the competition. With ten minutes remaining Italy finally showed some fight, a one-two between Quagliarella and Iaquinta saw the former shoot and Antonio Di Natale sweep in the rebound from Mucha’s save. Minutes later Quagliarella thought he had equalised but the goal was ruled out by a poor offside call. And with a minute to go substitute Kamil Kopunek lifted the third over Marchetti to send the world champions out the competition. In injury-time, Fabio Quagliarella brought Italy back into things again with a terrific chip over Mucha. In the dying stages Simone Pepe missed a great chance to draw the game and send Italy through.

At full time Marcello Lippi stormed down the tunnel without shaking the hand of Vladimir Weiss and Antonio Di Natale broke down in tears. Full time scenes here.

Paraguay 0 - New Zealand 0 (World Cup 2010, June 24, 2010) A game of few chances saw Paraguay finish top of the group and New Zealand exit the competition having drawn all three games. The All Whites finished third in Group F, above Italy.
