Video Evidence: Is West Ham target Miralem Sulejmani any good?
I really dont understand why Jol has vetoed the move. It looks like hes trying to ruin my career. I was looking forward to relaunching my career at West Ham. Their manager sees me as a big talent and Im keen to make a fresh start elsewhere. - Miralem Sulejmani.
The above quotessuggested West Ham would miss out on the 21-year-old Serbian forward but the Daily Mirror were having none of that, reporting todaythat Avram Grant is set to pull off a transfer coup by signing 14million Serbian striker Miralem Sulejmani - when Martin Jol moves to Fulham.
Quite why Ajax seem intent on selling all their best players is a discussion for another time, West Ham fans want to know how good is this Sulejmani chap?
The simple answer is that he was useful before he joined Ajax, but as with many players it is a little bit more complicated than that.
Heerenveen spotted Sulejmani in the Partizan Belgrade youth set-up when he wasjust 17. Lifein the north of the Netherlands went well, 15 goals in 34 appearances in 2007/2008 saw Ajax shell out 16.25 million euros to bring him to the capital.
His first season in Amsterdam suggested a bright future, ten goals and seven assists in 34 games isa decent return but under Martin Jol it all turned a little sour. Two goals and one assist in 26 appearances is pretty woeful and is underlined by the fact that Sulejmani did not play a full 90 minutes for Ajax in 2010.
Nevertheless, if West Ham do manage to secure his signature, they will have one of the hottest prospects in Europe on theirhands. Already capped five times for the Serbia national team, the diminutive 5.8 forward can play on either wing, although he prefers the left, and through the middle.
Sulejmani clearly needs to leaveAjax and he could be a useful option on the left wing to support what looks like being West Hams first choice strike partnership of Frederi! c Piquio nne and Carlton Cole. The fact he lacks physical presence is a concern if he does play in the Premier League but plenty of small statured players (e.g. former Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola) have excelled in England.
He is a gifted attacker who can beat opponents, create and score goals. Avram Grant and West Ham could do a lot worse than try and resuscitate the career of Miralem Sulejmani.
