Tevez inspires Argentina to win

Argentina's first half performance against Mexico was enough to see them through to the quarter-finals, as they beat a stubborn Mexico side 3-1 on Sunday evening.

Following a frantic opening, Diego Maradona's men took the lead in the 25th minute in controversial circumstances. Lionel Messi's through ball to Carlos Tevez was parried by Mexican 'keeper Oscar Perez. The ball, however, fell back into the path of Messi who lofted the ball through to the Manchester City striker to score.

Tevez, however, was clearly in an offside position when Messi played him in, with Mexico surrounding the referee in disgust.

Argentina's second came just eight minutes later. It proved to be a disaster for Mexican defender Ricardo Osorio, whose attempted back pass fell straight into the path of Gonzalo Higuain, and the prolific Real Madrid attacker made no mistake is shooting past Perez.

Carlos Tevez effectively ended the match as a contest shortly after the break. The diminutive striker wriggled free of the Mexican defence before unleashing an unstoppable shot from outside the box.

Manchester United-bound Javier Hernandez reduced the arrears to 3-1 with a brilliant run and shot past Sergio Romero twenty minutes from time. Mexico pressed and pressed without ever looking really threatening. Argentina were not at the their best, but they can now look forward to a clash against Germany next Friday.
