Individual Highlights: Leo Messi (Barcelona) vs Racing Santander & Jose Mourinho (Real Madrid) vs Mallorca

Image
One game down, and one man of the match award for Leo Messi. The superlatives have run out for the pocket-sized Argentine. After somewhat under-performing at the World Cup this summer, Messi turned on the class in his first outing of the new La Liga season with a superb shift against Santander. The gulf in class between the Catalans and Racing was visible in all departments, and Messi ran riot. On this display, he was untouchable, unplayable, and the best player in the world. Messi lobbed Racing keeper Tono for the opening goal of the night, which in turn set the tone for an excellent Barcelona performance. Leo Messis highlights can be seen here. It was a less positive first weekend for Real Madrid. Tipped to win at penny-less Mallorca in round one, Los Blancos came up short in a goalless encouter which leaves Jose Mourinhos men already playing catch-up to their Barca rivals. For his first league game as the Real boss the cameras were all over the Special One. Up and down like a jac

Another Contender for Miss of the Season: Marco Perez (Zaragoza) vs Deportivo La Coruna

Image
On Monday, in our regular top bloopers of the week round-up, we flagged up a couple of horrendous misses. There was Carlos Tevezs open goal fluff for Manchester City against Sunderland while slightly less well known was Piotr Gierczaks horror show for Polish outfit Gornik Zabrze in the match with Ruch Chorzow. Now we have a third loser to flag up. Step forward Marco Perez. Zaragozas 19-year-old Colombian hitman was guilty of a horror miss at the weekend against Deportivo. The teenager was faced with the simplest of opportunities as he looked to turn a left-sided pass into an open net from just two yards out. But Perezs effort was appalling and the youngster managed to aid the Depor backline with his shockingly bad attempt on target. Marco Perezs howler can be seen here. *** The other contenders for miss of the season include Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey, then Santos striker Robinho, Stromsgodsets Ola Kamara and CSKA Sofias Rui Miguel. Stjarnan score a great goal and introduce The Human Toilet celebration

Image
And it continues at least this week Stjarnan really had something to celebrate after scoring what must be one of the goals of the Icelandic Urvalsdelid season. To recap, Stjarnan have been busy in recent weeks rolling outa new celebration on a weekly basis to the delight of a global audience. So far we have seen their fish celebration (full article and footage), the bike routine (full article and footage), rewind, stroke and birth celebrations (full article and footage), their swimming and rowing celebrations (full article and footage) and last week the hand grenade (full article and footage). On Sunday night Stjarnan lost 3-2 at home to Fram. Atli Johansson made it 1-1 on 26 minutes for everyones favourite Icelandic side with an absolute cracker jack of a long range strike. The goal was followed by what looked like a botched attempt at a celebration but they didnt have long to wait to roll it out for a second time when they took a 2-1 lead through Thorvaldur Arnason nine minutes aft

Bob Bradley Signs to Coach USMNT Through 2014 World Cup

Image
Reports have come out this evening confirming that Bob Bradley will stay as coach of the US Mens National Team for another four years. Just as speculation was growing that Bradley would be out, Jurgen Klinsmann would be in, and US Soccer was going to make some significant changes before the next World Cup, it seems that everyone has chosen stability over transformation. There are several different ways to look at this: This was the right move Bradley may not be the most charismatic character of all time, but he did well. Under his stewardship, the US won the Gold Cup, got to the finals of the Confederations Cup, won the CONCACAF qualifying group, and won its World Cup Group. While the US did crash out of the World Cup by losing to Ghana in overtime, that game was as close as a game could be, and had the US won it, this decision would be a no-brainer. While major countries like France and Italy were having personality breakdowns in South Africa, Bradley kept our boys loose, focused and

Bradley to remain USMNT head coach through 2014

Image
Photo by ISIphotos.com Bob Bradley will remain the US men's national team coach through 2014 after reaching an agreement with U.S. Soccer on Monday. The sides reached an agreement to extend Bradley's contract as head coach through 2014 after discussions last week. Bradley's contract was due to expire at the end of 2010. Bradley helped guide the United States to a first-place finish in its group at the 2010 World Cup before the team was eliminated in an overtime defeat against Ghana in the Round of 16. Bradley had been linked to a handful of club coaching positions in Europe, and was believed to be seriously considering a move to Europe before agreeing to extend his contract with U.S. Soccer. U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati had reportedly met with Juergen Klinsmann about the possibility of him replacing Bradley, but ultimately chose to stick with Bradley. My initial thoughts? As I wrote on Fox Soccer last month, Bradley earned the right to come back if he wanted to. He

USSF D-2: A Look Back at Week 21

Image
By TRAVIS CLARK Two of the top teams in USSF Division 2 squared off Sunday evening, as the Austin Aztex concluded a swing to the Northwest to take on Vancouver. An entertaining 2-2 draw showed how little their was between two the league's finest. The host Whitecaps have to feel the worse off after this one, failing to hold on to two separate leads -- going ahead through Cornelius Stewart's 14th minute strike, then again thanks to new signing Ridge Mobulu in the 52nd minute. But lax defending on a set piece gave Eddie Johnson a chance to tie the game in the 80th minute, and Austin a second road point in the span of four days. Austin's tie narrows the margin with Rochester for top spot in the league, now just two points off the Rhinos' pace with three games in hand. Vancouver still has control of the NASL Conference, with a six-point cushion over the Railhawks. Here's a look at the rest of this weekend's USSF D-2 action: DIKE STARS AS PORTLAND DOMINATE BALTIMORE

MLS Week 22: A Look Back

Image
By AVI CREDITOR As the Major League Soccer season hits the final stretch, some contenders are rounding into form while an early-season favorite is sputtering to the finish line. With its 0-0 draw at Columbus, FC Dallas set a Major League Soccer record this past week by extending its road unbeaten streak to 10 games (3-0-7). New York avenged an earlier loss to San Jose by turning in a fine 2-0 performance, Seattle won the Ljungberg Cup with Fredy Montero's late winner and the Colorado Rapids continued their playoff push with a thorough beating of 10-man Houston. While those teams turned in strong performances, the Los Angeles Galaxy continued its run of inconsistency, as the once-unbeatable side suffered a shocking 2-0 loss at home to the Kansas City Wizards, who had just one road victory in nine tries before Saturday night's match. Here's a rundown of all of this past week's MLS games with links to the highlights: Columbus Crew 0, FC Dallas 0 In addition to extending i

MLS, adidas Extend Partnership Through 2018

Image
Major League Soccer and adidas have extended their partnership agreement through 2018, according to a press release Monday. The two have been partners since the first season of MLS back in 1996. The United States is a breeding ground for athletic talent and we need to ensure our homegrown athletes have viable opportunities to play soccer at the highest level, said Patrik Nilsson, president of adidas America, in the release. We need to accelerate the model for soccer development in North America to attract and keep elite talent engaged and excited about professional opportunities in the sport. We share a long-term vision with MLS to develop the game and are excited to foster the next generation of American soccer stars. MLS commissioner Don Garber also weighed in, adding One of the major reasons Major League Soccer has become one of the top soccer leagues in the world is due to the support and commitment of adidas. They have a clear vision for the sport in North America, and th

Monday Kickoff: Inter eyeing Fabregas, Ronaldo injured and more

Image
Just when you thought it was safe to assume Cesc Fabregas would stay with Arsenal this season, now comes word that a new team has replaced Barcelona as the top team looking to buy him. Inter Milan is reportedly set to offer 32.5million for the Spanish international in a late move that seems unlikely to succeed given Arsenal's consistent reluctance to part with its captain. The interest is just part of a late transfer window rumor mill that has also rekindled a potential Maicon to Real Madrid move. With Wednesday's transfer deadline looming there could still be some major moves made by top clubs looking to strengthen their squads. Here are some other stories to get your Monday going: RONALDO INJURED IN OPENER Cristiano Ronaldo will miss a handful of key matches after being ruled out for three weeks due to an ankle injury suffered in Real Madrid's season-opening draw against Mallorca. Ronaldo is expected to miss Portugal's upcoming European qualifiers, as well as Real M

Beasley signs with Hannover 96

Image
Photo by John Todd/ISIphotos.com DaMarcus Beasley has played in the Netherlands, England and Scotland, but now the U.S. national team midfielder will be able to add Germany to that list of destinations after signing a two-year deal to play for Hannover 96. The 28-year-old midfielder has been searching for a club since being let go by Scottish club Rangers, and had been pondering some offers from the Netherlands and England before Hannover expressed interest following the injury of regular starter Carlitos. Beasley joins U.S. World Cup teammate and Hannover captain Steve Cherundolo on a Hannover team coming off an impressive 2-1 win against Schalke 04 over the weekend. Beasley will be looking to rekindle a career marred by injuries in recent years. He showed flashes of his old form last season in Scotland, but struggled for playing time yet again. Top bloopers of the week

Image
There can only be one winner for blooper of the week and it comes from one of the top strikers in world football which perhaps adds to its beauty. Joining the likes of Ronnie Rosenthal and Aiyegbeni Yakubu in the famous misses ranks is Carlos Tevez for his goal gaping miss against Sunderland yesterday. Tevezs horror show should cheer up Gornik Zabrze midfielder Piotr Gierczak, the 34-year-old raced into the Ruch Chorzow box yesterday and missed a chance just as easy as the one at the Stadium of Light. Unlike Manchester City, Gornik won the game 1-0 and ultimately everyone knows Carlos Tevez and nobody knows (until now) PiotrGierczak. As ever it wasnt a great week for keepers. Rubin Kazancustodian Sergei Ryzhikov saw a 70-metre effort skip over his headand Brondby keeper Stephan Anderson had an attack of the Rob Greens for Sporting Lisbons second last Thursday night in the Europa League. Finally, the most amusing clips come from Brazil. Sao Paulos Fernandinho caused the wrath of the of

Somethin Like a Phenomenon: Ronaldo returns (Corinthians-Vitoria)

Image
(By Paul Morrissey) This could be it. The last time Ronaldo makes a titanic comeback in his illustrious if blighted career. As usual, fears for his safety and wellbeing were put to bed early doors with some assured control and passing. He lost possession and was yards off the pace, but the standard of Ronaldos play at this twilight hour is a moot point, and theres more than a bit of romanticism at play in Corinthians keeping the faith. Ronaldos had eight operations, he lives with daily pain (playing on in such circumstances could even be described as some form of masochism, though the release of adrenalin surely goes some way to alleviating the pain), and has had to have liquid drained from his knee during rehabilitative periods. While the greatness of his play has naturally deteriorated as the injuries have progressively taken their toll, were still in the presence of greatness. Lesser men have justifiably waved the white flag in his physical situation: the effort hes exerting to mak

Everybody loves a scoring goalie: Rogerio Ceni takes his tally to 90

Image
The important thing today was to add a point in this delicate moment were going through. What least matters now is the individual. When were winning and alls well we can even take the luxury of exalting personal records and achievements, but at this moment Sao Paulo need to be united to try and get out of this situation. Rogerio Ceni. Typically, Rogerio Ceni played down his 90th career goal for Sao Paolo last night with the six-time Brazilian champions languishing in 15th in the Serie A table. But, here on 101gg we love a scoring goalie and there is no one better than Ceni who now has an incredible 90 goals to his name. The latest, in a 2-2 draw with Fluminense was a low free-kick that gave Sao Paolo a 2-1 lead. The encounter was also notable for Decos first goal for Flu and Ceni also saved a penalty with twenty minutes to go to prove the veteran keeper isnt bad in goal either. Rogerio Cenis free-kick v Fluminense and 90th career goal is on this video. Full match highlights of Flumin

Braun's goal the difference as Chivas USA downs D.C. United, 1-0

Image
BY ADAM SERRANO CARSON, Calif -- An early goal by Justin Braun was the difference as Chivas USA defeated D.C. United at Home Depot Center on Sunday evening. Braun struck in the 13th minute of the match when after receiving a cross in from Ante Jazic, the burly striker brushed aside defender Dejan Jakovic and sent in a looping header that was too much for goalkeeper Troy Perkins to handle. The goal was Braun's eight of the season, which gives him the team lead. "My job is to score goals and I always have the confidence that the ball is going in for me and (my goal) was good for the team and gave us the win," said Braun. "Our goal has been to win every game at home and tonight was the first step." D.C. United struggled to generate offense throughout the match with many of their key starters --including Bill Hamid, Andy Najar and Chris Pontius -- left on the bench in preparation for the club's U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. With the Open Cup being the club's on

Match Night Commentary: D.C. United vs. Chivas USA

Image
BY ADAM SERRANO It's a battle of a pair of teams at the bottom of the table at the Home Depot Center as D.C. United visits Chivas USA (ESPN2, 7pm PST). Both clubs come into the match looking to salvage something from seasons that quickly gone awry. For United, the club will look to build on a satisfying win at home against expansion Philadelphia while Chivas USA looks for their first win since July 31st. This week's match comes as both clubs prepare for midweek fixtures in the U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. I will be providing commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump): PREGAME: It will be important for both clubs to go into the lead into the half. When the two clubs are leading at the end of the first 45, they are a combined 5-0. Two wins for Chivas and three for D.C. United. However, when the clubs trail at the hal
